What's in the live coding interview room
Este artigo ainda não está traduzido, por isso aparece em inglês.
A shared editor, terminal and running app, a whiteboard, chat and a built-in video call, plus controls for the interviewers who host it.
The room puts you and the candidate in the same sandbox: one editor, one terminal and one running app, with a whiteboard, a chat and a video call alongside. Interviewers host the room. The candidate works in it but can't change how it's set up.
The top bar
From left to right, the header shows:
- Leave, which takes you out of the room without ending the session.
- The candidate's name, the session type and a Live badge once the session is under way.
- The room views: Whiteboard, Code and Call. Interviewers also see Edit brief.
- The AI agents switch, shown as AI on or AI off.
- Everyone in the room, as avatars.
- The session clock.
- For interviewers: Copy link and End session.
Shared editor
Code opens a full editor on the session's sandbox. Everyone edits the same files at the same time, and you see the other people's cursors as they type.
To watch what someone else is doing, select their avatar in the top bar and choose Follow {name}. Their open file, cursor and scroll position then drive your view, and a banner shows Following {name}. Choose Exit follow, or just move around the code yourself, to stop.
Terminal and running app
The terminal runs in the same sandbox, so commands, test runs and installs are shared. If the project has a server, the side panel opens a Preview tab with the running app. Single-file questions don't have a preview.
If someone changes kendor.yaml, a kendor.yaml changed notice offers Restart sandbox. Services, install, preview and routing changes apply after the restart, and everyone moves to the new sandbox. The language, databases and sandbox settings stay as the challenge set them. See the kendor.yaml reference.
Whiteboard
Whiteboard opens a shared drawing board for sketching designs or working through an approach. Everyone draws on the same board, and it's kept with the session's result.
Interviewers decide whether the room is on the whiteboard or the code. When an interviewer switches, everyone moves with them, and the chat notes it, for example "Sam moved the room to the code". The candidate can't switch the room. They can only come back to where it is.
Video call
The call is built in, so nobody needs a separate meeting link. Your camera sits in a small dock you can drag to a corner, with buttons for Microphone, Camera, Share screen and Device settings. The call only connects once someone else is in the room.
Call (or ⌥B) puts the work away on your screen only and brings the faces up. From there you can pin someone for yourself, and an interviewer can choose Spotlight for everyone.
Anyone can share their screen with Share screen. Everyone sees {name} is presenting while it's on.
Note. Kendor doesn't record the call. No audio or video from the session is stored.
Chat and the brief
Chat is for links, snippets and clarifications. Everyone in the room sees it, the candidate included, and it ends with the room: nothing from the chat is saved to the candidate's profile.
The candidate sees the brief in their Prompt tab. An interviewer can change it at any time with Edit brief.
AI agents during the session
If AI agents are on, anyone in the session can run Claude Code or Codex in the terminal. An interviewer can select AI on or AI off to turn them off or on for everyone in the session. The switch covers the whole sandbox, interviewers included, and the chat notes who changed it. The candidate sees the switch but can't use it.
Host controls
Select a person's avatar to see what you can do. Interviewers can:
- Mute {name} to turn off their microphone.
- Remove {name} from the session. After you confirm with Remove, they leave the room and the call. Their link stays valid, so they can ask to join again, and you choose whether to admit them.
- Admit or Deny anyone who asks to join.
The session clock
Everyone sees how long the session has run. Interviewers also see the booked length next to it, for example 12:40 / 45:00. Select the clock to change the length to 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 minutes, or add +15 min.
Five minutes before the booked end, interviewers see how much time is left and a +15 min button. After that the clock shows Over the booked time. Nothing stops when time runs out: the session lasts until an interviewer ends it.
End the session
Only owners and editors can end a session. Choose End session and confirm. The sandbox shuts down for everyone, Kendor keeps the final code and the whiteboard, and you land on the candidate's profile, where the result lives. See Record verdicts after a live coding interview.
